Technical Lead - Rewards

Description

We are looking for a Technical Lead to drive the technical direction, quality, and health of the Investec Rewards technology platform and its supporting engineering systems.
This role is suited to an experienced engineer who wants to remain hands-on, while stepping into a broader leadership position. As a Tech Lead, you will spend less time on day-to-day feature delivery and more time solving complex engineering problems, shaping system design, and enabling your team to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.
You will work closely with Engineering Leads, Application Owners, and Architects to ensure systems are well-designed, maintainable, and aligned to our engineering standards. You will also play a key role in mentoring engineers and raising the overall engineering bar within the team.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the technical design and architecture of systems within your team, while partnering with Engineering Leads and Architects on key technical decisions
• Maintain the long-term health of systems, addressing risks such as coupling, scalability, and technical debt
• Drive adoption and consistent use of engineering standards and best practices
• Set and uphold a high bar for code quality through active participation in code reviews
• Ensure solutions are maintainable, testable, and production-ready
• Intervene where necessary to address quality issues or engineering gaps
• Support delivery by unblocking teams and resolving complex technical challenges
• Partner with Application Owners to ensure delivery is technically sound and sustainable
• Participate in incident response and lead technical problem-solving when required
• Mentor and coach engineers, particularly Senior Software Engineers
• Provide constructive feedback to support individual and team growth
• Contribute to platform roadmap discussions and technical direction
• Monitor and optimise cloud usage, balancing cost, performance, and reliability
• Participate in engineering forums, communities of practice, and knowledge sharing
• Contribute to broader engineering initiatives, standards, and reusable components

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

• Technical Leadership: Experience defining technical direction, establishing engineering standards, conducting architecture, design and code reviews, and mentoring engineers across complex technology platforms.
• Proficient in Programming Languages and Frameworks: Strong hands-on experience with .NET, C#, TypeScript and modern software engineering practices, with the ability to guide teams in designing and delivering scalable, maintainable and resilient solutions.
• Front-end Development: Strong knowledge of Angular, TypeScript, HTML and CSS, with experience delivering modern customer-facing web applications and guiding front-end engineering standards.
• Back-end Development and Solution Architecture: Experience designing distributed systems, APIs and enterprise applications, with the ability to make sound architectural decisions that balance business needs, engineering quality and long-term platform sustainability.
• Cloud Engineering: Strong Microsoft Azure experience, including cloud-native services, containerised workloads, security, monitoring, infrastructure automation and cost optimisation.
• Databases and Data Management: Experience working with SQL, relational databases, data integration patterns and performance optimisation across enterprise platforms.
• API Development and Integration: Ability to design, govern and support integrations across internal and external systems using modern API and service-oriented architecture principles.
• Version Control and Engineering Governance: Experience with Git, pull request processes, source control governance and the implementation of engineering standards and best practices across teams.
• DevOps and Continuous Delivery: Strong understanding of Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, release management, infrastructure automation and modern software delivery practices.
• Engineering Quality and Operational Excellence: Experience driving code quality, testing standards, incident management, root cause analysis and continuous improvement to ensure solutions are production-ready and operationally resilient.
• Technical Stewardship: Experience maintaining the long-term health of systems by driving engineering quality, managing technical debt, improving resilience, and ensuring solutions remain scalable, maintainable and aligned to architectural standards.
• Security Best Practices: Strong understanding of secure software development, authentication, authorisation and vulnerability management within regulated environments.
• Stakeholder Management and Communication: Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage engineers, architects, product owners, business stakeholders and senior leadership while influencing technical outcomes.
